On the Day of Remembrance for Fallen Defenders of Ukraine, with the participation of President Volodymyr Zelensky, the official opening of the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the Kyiv region took place.

First Ceremony of Burial for Unknown Soldiers
As part of the event, the first ceremony of burial for unknown heroes of Ukraine, whose names remain unidentified, was held on the territory of the memorial. High-ranking officials attended the ceremony: Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal, and Minister for Veterans Affairs Natalia Kalmykova.

During the ceremonies, those present honored the memory of each soldier who gave their life for Ukraine’s independence, and the memorial has become an important place for honoring fallen heroes.
Preparation of the Memorial and History of Its Creation
As previously reported, in July 2025, the government completed preparatory work for the first burials at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. Six thousand burial sites were arranged for this purpose. The state institution responsible for the memorial’s activities was established in November 2022.

The construction of the memorial cemetery began in the village of Hatne, near Kyiv, on a territory of 267 hectares. The memorial is intended to be a place of dignified remembrance for all fallen defenders who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
