The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, announced that the issue of the final number of British troops to be deployed in Ukraine after a peace agreement will be put to a vote in Parliament. This decision was made following a meeting in Paris, during which the UK and France confirmed their readiness to send their troops to support stability in Ukraine after the cessation of hostilities.
Details of the Upcoming Military Deployment
Keir Starmer emphasized that the final number of the military contingent will be determined according to the military plans developed by the UK, as well as in cooperation with partners and allies. The Prime Minister stressed that Parliament will have the final say on this matter, and the final decision will be made only after discussions in the House of Commons.
“We (at the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ meeting in Paris – ed.) made real progress on security guarantees that are vital for ensuring a fair and lasting peace. Together with President Macron and President Zelensky, we agreed on a declaration of intent regarding the deployment of forces in the event of a peace agreement. We will outline the details in a statement as soon as possible,” Starmer stated.
At the same time, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the Prime Minister for not making an official statement before Parliament regarding the agreements reached. Starmer promised to keep MPs informed of all further steps in a timely manner and clarified that military deployment in Ukraine is only possible after a ceasefire and the signing of relevant agreements.
New Agreements and the Role of the International Coalition
As a result of the negotiations in Paris, leaders of the European Union, NATO, as well as representatives from 27 countries, Turkey, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and special representatives from the US agreed on the Paris Declaration regarding “reliable security guarantees for a strong and lasting peace in Ukraine.” The document provides for the deployment of multinational forces on Ukrainian territory after the conclusion of military actions, including support from the United States.
Plans are in place to establish Anglo-French military centers and construct secure facilities for arms production, which will enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. According to a French official, these centers will facilitate coordination among allies on Ukrainian territory and ensure an organized process of interaction between partner countries.
Russia has opposed the presence of NATO forces in Ukraine after the war. Meanwhile, representatives from the US and their allies express confidence in the possibility of convincing the Kremlin to agree to the proposed security terms.
