Three Main Causes of Road Accidents in Ukraine: Statistics on Deaths and Injuries Over Seven Months

In Ukraine, 13,738 road traffic accidents involving casualties were recorded in the first seven months of 2025. In these accidents, 1,663 people lost their lives, and another 17,107 individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity.

Main Causes of Road Traffic Accidents with Severe Consequences

Law enforcement officials identified three key reasons that most often lead to road accidents with severe consequences in Ukraine. The largest number of accidents was caused by exceeding safe speed limits — this reason accounts for 41.5% of all cases. The second place was taken by violations of maneuvering rules — 7.1%, and in third place was the failure to maintain a safe distance, which led to 6.7% of accidents.

“As noted by law enforcement officials, the main causes of road accidents with severe consequences are speeding (41.5% of the total number of road traffic incidents), violations of maneuvering rules (7.1%), and failure to maintain distance (6.7%).”

Statistics on Road Accidents Involving Children, Pedestrians, and Intoxicated Drivers

The number of accidents involving children is particularly concerning. During the specified period, there were 2,531 road accidents, resulting in the deaths of 91 minors and injuries to 2,904. Regarding road accidents involving pedestrians, the police recorded 3,172 such cases, which led to the deaths of 415 people and injuries to 2,954 individuals.

Separately, law enforcement officials highlighted accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol. During this period, 380 such accidents were registered, resulting in the deaths of 42 people and injuries to another 474.
