Trial Begins in Kyiv for Former Prosecutor Involved in Fatal DUI Accident

The trial regarding a former prosecutor who caused a fatal traffic accident while under the influence of alcohol has commenced in the capital. Following the preparatory hearing, the court has set a date for the main proceedings.

Circumstances of the Tragedy on Velyka Vasylkivska

According to Ukraine’s Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko, the incident occurred on July 19 on Velyka Vasylkivska Street. The former prosecutor, with a blood alcohol level of 1.77 promille, lost control, veered onto the sidewalk, and fatally injured a woman. The victim died in the hospital from her injuries.

“I participated in the preparatory court hearing in this high-profile case of a fatal traffic accident involving a former prosecutor. On July 19 on Velyka Vasylkivska Street in Kyiv, while driving under the influence of alcohol (1.77 promille), he veered onto the sidewalk and struck a woman. She died in the hospital from her injuries,” reported Ruslan Kravchenko.

Evidence and Further Proceedings

On the same day, the suspect was formally charged and dismissed from law enforcement. The investigative team, led by Ruslan Kravchenko, gathered a comprehensive body of evidence, examining surveillance camera footage, eyewitness testimonies, and the results of eight expert examinations, including forensic, automotive, psychological, fingerprint, and molecular-genetic analyses.

The court has ruled to proceed with the case on its merits. The former prosecutor is charged with violating traffic rules while intoxicated, resulting in a person’s death (Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The substantive hearing is scheduled for November 18. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, the state prosecution insists on the inevitability and fairness of punishment for the suspect.
