The historic Floriv Cemetery, located on Castle Hill, may soon receive official recognition as a cultural heritage site. The necessary measures are being initiated by the State Historical and Architectural Reserve “Ancient Kyiv” in collaboration with specialists from the Kyiv Scientific and Methodological Center for the Protection of Monuments.

Official Recognition and the Importance of the Cemetery

Currently, the cemetery does not have formal heritage status. This issue is planned to be discussed at the Advisory Council on Cultural Heritage Protection of the relevant department of the Kyiv City State Administration. The adoption of this decision will help preserve over fifty ancient tombstones that hold historical value.

“We are working to officially document over fifty ancient tombstones on Castle Hill for the first time in history as a cultural heritage site,” said Roman Malenkov, Deputy General Director of the Kyiv Scientific and Methodological Center for the Protection of Monuments of DIAZ.

Historical Background of the Floriv Necropolis

The necropolis of the Ascension Floriv Monastery is one of the oldest women’s monastic cemeteries in Kyiv. It was established in the 19th century when the monastery became a prestigious burial site for representatives of the Kyiv intelligentsia, clergy, and patrons. Today, this place remains an important testament to the history and culture of the city.
