“I was just informed that nearly 20,000 Russian soldiers have died this month in a senseless war with Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers… Ukraine, however, has also suffered greatly. Since January 1, 2025, it has lost approximately 8,000 soldiers, and this number does not include the missing,” Trump wrote on his own platform TruthSocial, without indicating who provided him with this information.
Civilian and Military Casualties
Trump also reminded of the numerous casualties among the civilian population of Ukraine due to ongoing Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and other cities. Additionally, the politician reiterated his intention to try to stop the war if given the opportunity.
Official Loss Statistics
According to independent investigators, as of July 29, at least 121,507 Russian servicemen have died on the front since the beginning of the invasion. This data is cited in a report prepared by analysts, journalists, and volunteers who are tracking losses based on open sources. Meanwhile, experts emphasize that the actual losses may be significantly higher, as information about all fatalities is not always available to the public and volunteers.
According to estimates from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of the morning of August 1, Russia’s total losses in the war against Ukraine amount to approximately 1,054,200 military personnel (these figures include both dead and wounded, with the wounded potentially being counted multiple times). Over the last day, according to this data, Russia lost another 940 military personnel.
Officially, Russia does not disclose its losses. The last time Moscow reported casualties was in September 2022, stating 5,937 losses. The Ukrainian side also refrained from publishing loss data for a long time, citing security concerns and the intention to release information after the war ends. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in February 2024 that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, over 46,000 Ukrainian military personnel have died, and the number of wounded is approaching 380,000.
