US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump must soon determine how much more time his administration will devote at the highest level to the issue of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, this is a war that has no military solution: «Essentially, Putin cannot capture all of Ukraine; Ukraine cannot push the Russians back to where they were in 2014. Therefore, the question is, who is the only leader in the world who can negotiate with both sides and hopefully bring them to an agreement, and that is President Trump. And that is what he has been trying to do. Look, we have gotten closer», he noted during an appearance on Fox News.

Rubio stated that currently the positions of Ukraine and Russia are “still somewhat distant from each other.”
«We are not going to walk away from this in the sense that we will not be ready to help if we can, but there comes a moment when the president has to decide how much more time at the highest level of our government to devote to this issue, when perhaps one of the two sides or both are not close enough.»
He added that the US has many other important issues, including the situation with China, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and other international challenges.
Increased US efforts for peace in Ukraine
In recent months, the administration in Washington has intensified efforts to find ways to end the war. On April 25, President Donald Trump called for Ukraine and Russia to engage in high-level negotiations to reach a peace agreement. This came after a meeting between White House envoy Steve Vitkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on April 27 that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must be reached as soon as possible, and the states need to determine their further role as a mediator. He did not specify how long the administration is willing to wait for a breakthrough in negotiations.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga also stated that the Ukrainian side is ready for negotiations in any format if Russia shows a willingness to take the difficult path to peace, rather than just talking about peace for populist purposes.
