Meetings Following Talks in Moscow
Before traveling to Ukraine, Hakan Fidan made a two-day visit to Moscow, where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky. In addition, on Tuesday, the minister met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. According to reports, after concluding his visit to Moscow, the Turkish diplomat will head to Kyiv to discuss current issues with Ukrainian officials.
“Hakan Fidan, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey, will visit Ukraine on May 29-30,” the statement said.
Recent Negotiations Between Ukraine and Russia
On May 16, negotiations took place in Istanbul between delegations from Ukraine and Russia. Although the parties did not achieve significant progress, they managed to agree on a prisoner exchange on a “thousand for thousand” basis. The latest stage of this exchange occurred on May 25.
The negotiations marked the first meeting between representatives of Ukraine and Russia in the last three years. The Ukrainian side insisted on implementing a 30-day ceasefire; however, Russia continues to assert its territorial claims, particularly regarding the recognition of its sovereignty over four Ukrainian regions. None of these territories are fully controlled by Russian forces, yet Moscow makes this a key condition for beginning discussions on halting hostilities.
The agenda for Hakan Fidan’s visit to Ukraine has not been officially disclosed.
