Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgiy Tikhiy, commented on President of Russia Vladimir Putin’s speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Tianjin. According to the MFA representative, Putin repeated a number of false claims regarding the reasons for the war against Ukraine, attempting to shift the blame onto the West.

Putin’s Statements and the MFA’s Response
During his speech at the SCO summit, Putin once again called the war in Ukraine a result of the so-called “coup” in Kyiv, which, according to him, was supported by Western countries. Thus, the Kremlin once again tried to shift the blame for the onset of aggression onto other states, referring to the 2014 Revolution of Dignity as a “state coup.”
Furthermore, Putin characterized Ukraine’s aspirations for NATO membership as a “direct threat to the security of Russia,” although the North Atlantic Alliance has repeatedly denied such claims.
“Of course, the ‘treacherous West’ provoked ‘poor Russia’ to attack its neighbor and commit hundreds of thousands of war crimes,” the MFA representative sarcastically remarked.
Ukraine’s Position on Russia’s Statements
Georgiy Tikhiy emphasized that the Kremlin leader is “gradually losing his significant skills in lying,” and his propaganda theses are becoming “increasingly boring.” He stressed that the only effective means of countering Russian disinformation remains consistent international pressure on Moscow.
Following the SCO summit on September 1, the Tianjin Declaration was adopted in China. The document outlines the principles of non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force, and rejection of unilateral sanctions. At the same time, Ukraine is not directly mentioned in the text of the declaration.
