Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukrainians are allegedly threatening not only him but also members of his family. He made this claim on his social media on March 11, sharing a fragment of a phone conversation with his daughters.

“I am sure you will see in the news that Ukrainians have threatened not only me but also you. My children and my grandchildren… We must take this seriously, but we should not be afraid,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Possible Reasons for Orban’s Statement
Orban’s statement is likely related to recent remarks made by former Ukrainian politician Hryhoriy Omelychenko. During a broadcast on the “Pravda” channel, the 74-year-old Omelychenko noted that “karma never forgives anyone’s crimes; you cannot escape or hide from it,” and advised Orban to think about his family. He also emphasized that, in his opinion, for Orban, Russian oil is more important than the lives of Ukrainian children.
Context of Deteriorating Relations
Relations between Kyiv and Budapest remain strained due to the Hungarian government’s stance on aid to Ukraine. On March 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, without naming names, stated that Ukraine could provide its military with the address of “one person in the European Union” who is blocking financial assistance to Ukraine.
Zelensky emphasized: “We hope that one person in the European Union will not block 90 billion or the first tranche of 90 billion, and that Ukrainian soldiers will have weapons; otherwise, we will give that person’s address to our Armed Forces, to our guys – let them call him and communicate with him in their own language.”
The day before, Orban stated on social media that Hungary would not agree to compromises regarding the oil embargo and promised that “Hungarian energy will soon flow again through the Druzhba pipeline.”
