The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, officially sent a letter to the President and Congress of the United States of America requesting assistance in providing the country with air defense systems. The advisor to the head of state, Dmytro Lytvyn, confirmed this information on May 27, noting that the appeal was addressed to both recipients — the US President and Congress.

Ukraine calls on the US to strengthen defense against ballistic missiles

In the letter, Zelensky emphasizes the critical shortage of air defense systems, particularly for countering ballistic missiles. According to him, Kyiv “relies solely on the United States” for repelling ballistic strikes, especially due to the PAC-3 missiles used in Patriot systems. The appeal also expresses concern about potential delays or reductions in the supply of American weapons due to the PURL program.

“Yes, it’s true, (the letter was sent – ed.) to the US President and Congress, there are two recipients.”

Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts after the shelling of Kyiv

According to sources, the letter was delivered to the White House, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and other influential members of Congress through Ukrainian Ambassador Olga Stefanishyna. This step came against the backdrop of recent massive attacks on Kyiv with missiles and drones.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation stated twice on May 24 about the intentions of the Russian armed forces to carry out “systematic strikes” on the Ukrainian capital, targeting military-industrial complex enterprises and decision-making centers. Such threats underscore the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.
