Zelensky’s Statement on the Situation in Iran

“The Iranian people have long been virtually alone against violence – against the Iranian regime. This regime, which has killed tens of thousands of its citizens in just the last few months and has always supported and organized wars in the region, which provided Russia with ‘Shaheds’ and the technology for their production, this regime has defined its own attitude towards itself. It is important to have a clear position of support for the people and for life. It is crucial that American resolve, and the resolve of everyone in the world, truly works. I thank everyone who is striving to prevent the expansion of war and protect against strikes from Iran,” emphasized the head of the Ukrainian state in an evening video address on March 1.

Zelensky highlighted that the Iranian people have long been left to face repression and violence from the existing regime on their own. The president noted that the Iranian authorities have been responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of their own citizens in recent months and have consistently initiated or supported wars in the region.

International Context and Results of the Operation

Before the military actions initiated by the U.S. and Israel on February 28, there had been months of negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The American side insisted on Iran’s complete abandonment of the development of nuclear weapons.

As a result of the strike by the joint forces of the U.S. and Israel, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other high-ranking representatives of the Iranian regime were killed. These events could be pivotal for the further development of the situation both within Iran and throughout the region.
