Petition for the Preservation of Archaeological Heritage
This is reported by Kyiv24
A call has been sent to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, urging him to personally oversee the archaeological and historical landmark of national significance — the “Site of the Coastal Urban Quarter of Medieval Kyiv” at Postal Square. This area is known for its preserved remains of a medieval port and is closely linked to key historical events that influenced the development of Kyiv and all of Europe.
Petition to Protect Postal Square
The collection of signatures in support of the initiative is ongoing on the official presidential portal. The authors of the petition emphasize that this unique location preserves not only material evidence of ancient Kyiv but also spiritual heritage. According to historical data, it was here in 945 that one of the first Orthodox churches — the Church of St. Elijah — was built. Additionally, ancient road and sidewalk paving can still be seen in this area, which serves as important evidence of the high level of development and education of the residents of the medieval city.
Threat to Cultural Heritage
Signatories of the document emphasize that today the territory of the landmark is under threat of destruction due to the implementation of an entirely illegal project to build a multifunctional shopping and entertainment center disguised as a transport interchange.
The public is concerned about the risk of losing important historical heritage due to the commencement of construction of a shopping and entertainment center, which is presented as a transport interchange. Activists stress the need for state intervention to halt the potential destruction of this unique archaeological complex and preserve it for future generations.
