This day is dedicated to the tragic yet heroic events of modern history, particularly the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Russian encirclement near Ilovaisk in 2014. It was in honor of this date that President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree establishing Defenders’ Memory Day in August 2019.

The Significance of the Ilovaisk Tragedy for National Memory
The withdrawal from the encirclement near Ilovaisk became one of the most painful chapters of the war waged by Russia against Ukraine. It is after these events that thousands of Ukrainians annually honor the memory of the military who gave their lives for the freedom of their homeland.
President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his address, emphasized the importance of remembering the heroism and sacrifice of the defenders.
“Since 2014, this battle for Ukraine’s right to exist has been ongoing. Since 2022, Ukrainians have been defending themselves in a full-scale war. This is an extraordinarily long and complex path of courage. And we do not forget who has kept Ukraine safe. Eternal glory to all who stood up to defend Ukraine! Eternal memory to everyone who died in the struggle for Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!” – wrote Volodymyr Zelensky in today’s address on the occasion of Defenders’ Memory Day.

Words of Gratitude and Support from the Military Command
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, also addressed Ukrainians with a call to maintain unity and strength. He emphasized that every loss for the army and society is a deep pain, yet the heroism of the defenders will not be forgotten, and their memory will serve as a foundation for the ongoing struggle for freedom and independence.
Thanks to the courage and self-sacrifice of Ukrainian soldiers, the state continues to fight for its future, and the memory of the fallen heroes unites the nation in its quest for victory.
