Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that the United States is negotiating with the Russian Federation regarding possible ceasefire options. However, Moscow currently shows no willingness to compromise. According to Zelensky, American diplomats are actively working on discussing various scenarios, but Russia maintains a hardline stance.
“The Americans are definitely negotiating with the Russians, discussing various options. I will respond very simply: for now, Russia is turning up its nose, but we have strong partners, some of whom are particularly strong, and they can turn that nose if they want,” Zelensky told reporters when asked whether the US and its allies plan to increase pressure on Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
Kyiv Insists on Security Guarantees Before Peace Agreement
The Ukrainian authorities emphasize that before concluding a peace agreement, it is necessary to achieve a ceasefire and ensure security guarantees for Ukraine. Official Kyiv insists on strict adherence to these conditions as the basis for further negotiations.
Kremlin’s Position and International Community’s Reaction
Moscow currently rejects the possibility of halting hostilities. In December, Kremlin representatives stated that they do not consider a ceasefire option in Ukraine. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the idea of a ceasefire or a pause on the front is not accepted by the Russian side.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) emphasize that Russian President Vladimir Putin consistently adheres to maximalist military goals regarding Ukraine — the very goals that initiated the full-scale invasion in 2022. According to ISW, the Kremlin has repeatedly rejected peace initiatives from the US and Ukraine, attempting to shift the responsibility for the lack of progress onto the Ukrainian side.
