According to the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, the con artist posed as an assistant to a member of parliament and claimed that a monetary reform was planned in Ukraine. She assured the pensioner that all old banknotes would soon lose their validity, so it was necessary to urgently exchange them for new ones.

Methods of the Fraudster

In order to convince the elderly woman, the fraudster claimed to be a trusted person of the deputy and assured her that she was personally collecting funds for the exchange on his behalf. After that, the pensioner invited her to her apartment, where she handed over all her savings in exchange for souvenir banknotes.

“After receiving the money, the deputy’s trusted person replaced the real banknotes with counterfeit souvenir ones and disappeared. However, during the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers were able to return the money to the victim,” the prosecutor’s office stated.
