Expansion of Ukraine’s Diplomatic Presence

The opening of this diplomatic institution will significantly enhance support for approximately 40,000 Ukrainian citizens living in the Košice and Prešov self-governing regions. The consulate will work on providing consular services, promoting trade, investments, and cultural diplomacy. Special attention will be given to preserving Ukrainian identity and strengthening ties between the Ukrainian and Slovak communities.

“The new institution expands Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Slovakia, will provide consular support to about 40,000 Ukrainians in the Košice and Prešov self-governing regions, and will promote trade and investment, cultural diplomacy, the preservation of Ukrainian identity, and the strengthening of ties between the Ukrainian and Slovak peoples,” the statement reads.

Support for Ukrainians and Development of Bilateral Relations

According to Andrii Sybiha, the opening of the consulate opens new prospects for the development of relations between Ukraine and Slovakia and allows for more effective care of the Ukrainian community in this country. Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár noted that since the onset of the full-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, nearly 2 million Ukrainians have transited through Slovakia, many of whom have remained to live in Slovakia. He emphasized that the Slovak side has always been ready to provide them with the necessary assistance.

During the meeting, Andrii Sybiha thanked the Slovak government for supporting Ukraine’s aspiration for a just peace for all of Europe, as well as for participating in the coalition for civilian shelters and providing energy equipment, including 37 generators that have already arrived in Sumy.

Additionally, the minister announced that the opening of the General Consulate in Prešov took place according to plans that were announced back in October 2025.
