Ukrainian servicemen who have deserted (AWOL) before May 25, 2025, have the opportunity to return to service through a simplified procedure. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Kateryna Chernohrenko during a telethon.

Simplified Return Rules for Military Personnel

According to Chernohrenko, military personnel who left their place of service before May 10, 2025, can restore their service by August 30, 2025. This procedure is simplified, allowing servicemen to quickly resume their duties.

“It should be noted that as of now, military personnel who went AWOL before May 10, 2025, can return to service through a simplified procedure by August 30, 2025. I appeal to all servicemen who intend to return from AWOL.”

AWOL, or absence without leave, occurs when a serviceman leaves their place of duty without the commander’s permission or valid reasons.

Legislative Changes and Social Guarantees

In January 2025, the Verkhovna Rada made its first decision to extend the deadline for returning to service for military personnel who deserted or went AWOL. At that time, return was possible until March 1, 2025.

In August 2024, parliament approved a law that allows for no penalties for the first instance of going AWOL or desertion if the serviceman voluntarily returns and the commander permits the restoration of service. Under martial law, this law stipulates that the contract of a serviceman who has left their unit for the first time but returned voluntarily will be extended.

The State Bureau of Investigation emphasized that military personnel who voluntarily return to their duties will be reinstated with all social guarantees entitled to them by law.
