Kremlin Claims Strategic Advantage in War and Refusal of Ceasefire with Ukraine

«у нас є перевага, ми не збираємося її втрачати»

The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Russia has no intention of establishing a ceasefire with Ukraine, as it currently possesses a “strategic advantage” in the war. He made this announcement in an interview with the British television company Sky News.

Kremlin’s Position on Ceasefire and Western Support for Ukraine

“Right now, we have a strategic advantage. Why should we lose it? We do not intend to lose it. We are moving forward. We are advancing and will continue to advance.”

According to Peskov, Russia could consider a ceasefire only if Western countries completely halt military supplies to Ukraine during the ceasefire period. He emphasized that Moscow does not see any willingness for such steps from the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. “A ceasefire is a ceasefire; you stop. But America does not say ‘we will stop all supplies,’ nor do Britain and France. That is the problem,” he noted.

Russia’s Conditions for Ending the War and Diplomatic Initiatives

As of June 2025, 100 days have passed since Ukraine agreed to an unconditional ceasefire at the initiative of the United States. At the same time, the Russian Federation agrees to ceasefire only after a number of conditions are met, including: the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from four regions, a complete halt to Western military supplies, the cessation of mobilization, and the lifting of martial law in Ukraine.

During negotiations in Istanbul on June 2, Ukraine proposed to hold a leaders’ meeting by the end of the month. Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kyslytsya reported that the Russian side refuses to agree to a ceasefire even in the event of negotiations. Earlier, Kyiv initiated a meeting at the level of leaders from Ukraine, the USA, and Russia, but the Kremlin stated that such a meeting should only take place after specific agreements between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations.

Peskov paid special attention during the interview to the situation in the Middle East. The Kremlin representative deemed the idea of regime change in Iran unacceptable and categorically rejected the discussion of such a possibility.
