Discovery During the Inspection of an International Parcel
During the customs inspection of an international postal shipment heading from Ukraine to Canada, customs officers noticed a suspicious declaration. The documents contained an ambiguous description of the contents:
“sample/18/1.5/17 US dollars”.
Upon opening the parcel, it became clear that it contained not only the declared items. Among metal bowls, a medicinal product, and chocolate packaging, customs officials discovered hidden funds: 35,100 US dollars and 7,350 Canadian dollars. According to the official exchange rate of the National Bank of Ukraine on the date of shipment, this amount totaled 1,675,925 hryvnias.
Legal Consequences and International Regulations
According to customs representatives, this is one of the largest sums found in international postal shipments in recent times. Under the Universal Postal Convention, it is strictly prohibited to include coins, banknotes, or other valuables without declared value in international postal shipments unless permitted by the legislation of the sending and receiving countries.
Due to the violation of customs regulations, Kyiv Customs has drawn up the appropriate protocol, and the seized funds have been placed in storage pending a court decision.
