In Kyiv, during an air raid when the city was subjected to another Russian shelling on October 22, an employee of the Kyivpastrans company tried to evict a woman along with her child from the shelter. The incident occurred in the only shelter in the neighborhood, where local residents traditionally go during missile and drone attacks.

Details of the Incident

According to journalist Yulia Kyriienko, who was one of the victims, the Kyivpastrans employee attempted to force not only her and her son to leave the shelter but also several other women. The employee did not explain the reasons for her actions, justifying her decision with the phrase: “What are you doing here?” Those present in the shelter were there to keep in touch with their loved ones — after the explosions, people were trying to find out about the safety of their relatives in the city, where Russian missiles and drones were flying.

“Shahids and missiles are flying over Kyiv. People are dying again. But there are those who evict people from the shelter. An employee of Kyivpastrans tried to kick me and my son out of the shelter. Me and several other women. The reason is unknown. The argument: ‘What are you doing here?’ We are here to keep in touch. To ask our loved ones ‘How are you?’ after the latest explosion. To stay connected when Russian missiles are flying over your city, where your relatives and friends are,” Yulia wrote.

Accessibility Issues of Shelters

Yulia Kyriienko emphasized that this shelter remains the only safe point in the area for residents with children and pets during air raids. She also pointed out the lack of basic amenities, including a toilet, for people who are forced to hide there during shelling, and called on the management of Kyivpastrans to open shelters in a timely manner and to train employees to treat citizens’ lives responsibly.
