In Kyiv, law enforcement officers detained a 56-year-old man who demanded $30,000 from a local entrepreneur in exchange for not disclosing compromising information about his personal life. According to the investigation, the suspect took advantage of his knowledge of the businessman’s private relationship with his subordinate and used this information for pressure and blackmail.

Threats of violence and physical harm

“The suspect, having learned private details about the entrepreneur’s personal life with his subordinate, used this information as a means of pressure. The perpetrator demanded that he be paid $30,000, and in case of refusal, he threatened to make evidence public and intimidated the man with a weapon and physical harm if he did not comply,” said investigator Maria Martymianova from the Solomyansky District Police Department.

The investigation established that the suspect arrived at the underground parking lot where the victim lived and, armed with a pistol, began to intimidate him and demand a large sum of money. Subsequently, the man repeatedly sent threatening messages to the entrepreneur, insisting on the payment of $30,000.

Motives for blackmail and qualification of the crime

It turned out that one of the motives for the extortion was jealousy: the entrepreneur had previously been the boss of the suspect’s ex-wife, which led to personal animosity and blackmail.

The crime has been classified under part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – extortion committed in conditions of martial law or a state of emergency. For such actions, the detainee faces a sentence of 7 to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
