Support for Ukraine from Germany

During the talks, Zelensky thanked the German side for providing Patriot air defense systems and missiles for them, as well as for the modern IRIS-T systems produced in Germany. He emphasized that strengthening air defense is critical for the safety of citizens and allows Ukrainians to return to normal life—attending schools, working, and strengthening the country’s economy.

“We are grateful for the Patriot systems and the missiles for these systems, as well as for your domestically produced IRIS-T systems. This is important for us because it is about the lives of our people. Today is the first of September. And this is an opportunity for children to go to school, an opportunity for people to work, and an opportunity to fill the Ukrainian budget, to strengthen our economy,” Zelensky stated.

Efforts in Diplomacy and Security Guarantees

According to the President’s Office, the parties thoroughly examined the next steps to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system. The conversation also addressed diplomatic efforts, the importance of achieving a ceasefire, and developing security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelensky pointed out that two weeks have passed since the last negotiations with the President of the United States and European leaders in Washington, yet Russia has not shown readiness for dialogue at the highest level during this period, but instead continued missile attacks on cities and communities in Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people.

The President emphasized that only decisive actions by the international community can influence the behavior of the Russian Federation, and therefore Ukraine expects support from Berlin in increasing pressure on the aggressor. Jens Spahn assured that the government and parliament of Germany will continue to support Ukraine.

The coalition of German parties, the “Christian Democratic Union” and the “Christian Social Union,” commented on the visit of their leader, emphasizing the need for “unconditional solidarity” with Ukraine. In a joint statement, it was noted that the ruling factions of the Bundestag firmly stand with the Ukrainian people.

Earlier, the German Minister of Finance announced plans to provide Ukraine with 9 billion euros annually over the coming years, which will be a significant contribution to supporting the state in wartime.
