Petition for the Preservation of Printed Media

City residents have called on the local authorities to preserve and restore the network of kiosks that previously sold newspapers and periodicals. A corresponding electronic petition has appeared on the official website of the Kyiv City Council.

The authors of the public initiative emphasize that such kiosks have been an integral part of the city’s cultural space for many years. Their hasty dismantling, according to the signatories, has provoked significant concern among Kyiv residents.

Printed Media as Important Social Infrastructure

The petition states that kiosks selling printed media are fundamentally different from ordinary commercial kiosks and serve as a form of social infrastructure. They provide citizens with the right to access information. The complete elimination of this type of retail network, according to the initiators, could significantly restrict this right.

“Press kiosks, as the petition signatories emphasize, are an important channel for disseminating current information, local news, educational and entertainment publications. This is especially true for the elderly and individuals who do not have stable access to the Internet.”

In addition to their informational function, kiosks provide jobs for many Kyiv residents. The authors of the petition argue that the complete cessation of such points of sale will lead to job losses for a significant number of people.
