On January 16, Alexander Lukashenko initiated a sudden and large-scale check of the Armed Forces of Belarus. This check, as reported by the Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Wolfovich, will encompass several stages and will take into account the experience of the so-called “special military operation” of Russia against Ukraine.

Comprehensive Check of the Army and Objectives of the Exercises
According to Wolfovich, the exercises will involve practicing issues related to the protection of military units, as well as countering modern means of combat, including unmanned aerial vehicles. Special attention will be paid to the practical implementation of experiences from armed conflicts in recent years into the activities of Belarusian army units.
“A large-scale check of the Armed Forces has begun. It will be comprehensive and consist of several stages,” quotes the state agency BelTA the words of the Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Wolfovich.
Lukashenko’s Personal Involvement and Belarus’s Role in the War
Wolfovich emphasized that Lukashenko personally approved the conduct of the exercises and will participate in them. The check will begin with an inspection of one of the largest military-technical support units, where armored vehicles and weapons are stored.
In December 2025, Lukashenko expressed the position that Ukraine allegedly handed Crimea over to Russia, and that the war began due to the “oppression of the Russian-speaking population.” Formally, Belarus is not participating in the war; however, from its territory, Russian troops launched an offensive towards Kyiv at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Additionally, Belarusian hospitals were used to treat Russian soldiers, and the country’s airspace was used for launching missiles at Ukraine.
