Planned negotiations in Berehove
Madyar shared his vision after a meeting with the mayor of Berehove, Zoltan Babak. During the conversation, issues concerning the status of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia were discussed. Madyar emphasized that the goal of the upcoming meeting is to improve conditions for Transcarpathian Hungarians and to restore all their cultural, linguistic, administrative rights, and the right to higher education.
“I am initiating a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the beginning of June, symbolically in the city of Berehove, where the majority of the population is Hungarian. The purpose of the meeting is to assist Transcarpathian Hungarians in improving their situation and their stay in their homeland. It is time for Ukraine to lift the legal restrictions that have existed for over ten years, and for Transcarpathian Hungarians to regain all their cultural, linguistic, administrative rights, and rights to higher education,” he wrote.
The leader of the “Tisa” party expressed confidence that a constructive dialogue between the countries could initiate a new phase in relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
Political context and expectations
According to the mayor of Berehove, Zoltan Babak, during the meeting with Madyar, the state of the cultural and educational sectors in the community was discussed, as well as issues regarding the expansion of contacts with European institutions and participation in development programs.
Peter Madyar had previously emphasized his intention to meet with the President of Ukraine, and Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed his readiness for such a conversation.
It is worth noting that on April 12, elections were held, resulting in the “Tisa” party gaining a constitutional majority in the Hungarian parliament, ending a 16-year period of Viktor Orban’s rule. Peter Madyar is expected to take the oath of office as Prime Minister on May 9.
