Focus on Developing Drone Units

As the minister noted, cooperation with Sergiy Sternenko is expected to improve the organization of drone units’ work at the front. Currently, only 50 out of 400 such units are responsible for most successful strikes against the enemy, so one of the tasks is to significantly enhance the effectiveness of the remaining 350 units. To achieve this, a systematic approach to providing drones, analytics, experience sharing, and additional military training is planned.

“I met with volunteer Sergiy Sternenko. Recently, he had a conversation with the president – we are deepening cooperation to accomplish the set tasks. From now on, Sergiy will be my advisor on increasing the use of UAVs at the front. His experience will help us realize a shared vision of enhancing the effectiveness of drone units,” Fedorov wrote on Telegram on the evening of January 22.

The minister emphasized that to achieve the goals, work must be done on several fronts simultaneously, including equipping units with modern drones, analytics, and optimizing processes based on feedback from the front.

Sternenko’s Views and the Ministry’s Reset

Sternenko confirmed that he is joining the Ministry of Defense team as an advisor and expressed his readiness to assist in implementing the minister’s strategy for developing unmanned technologies. According to him, a shared vision for the development of the defense sector and the improvement of drone units should help Ukrainian forces inflict maximum losses on Russian occupiers.

The appointment of the new advisor took place against the backdrop of personnel changes in the Ministry of Defense. The Verkhovna Rada supported Mykhailo Fedorov’s appointment as minister on January 14, and President Volodymyr Zelensky approved a series of personnel decisions to strengthen the country’s defense capability. On January 21, the Cabinet of Ministers dismissed five deputy ministers of defense.
