“We do not yet have a fully finalized project, but we hope that we are at the stage of convergence”
According to diplomatic sources, if Russia refuses the ceasefire, the parties plan to impose new sanctions against Moscow. A source in the diplomatic service noted that a compromise is currently being sought, and an official announcement could come in the next few hours or days.
Possibility and Consequences of Implementing a Ceasefire
At the same time, representatives of the US and Europe are discussing whether to declare a unilateral ceasefire or give Russia a short period to respond. If Moscow refuses, new sanctions will be imposed against it, including restrictions from the US and the European Union.
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on Russia to adhere to its commitments and strive for a “peaceful, free, and secure future for all,” especially for Ukrainians and Russians. Ukraine has already expressed its readiness to accept the US proposal for a ceasefire.
Russia unilaterally declared a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. However, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, Russian troops violated the ceasefire on the very first day of this initiative.
International Reaction and Events Surrounding Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a summit of the “coalition of the willing” for Saturday, and French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed his country’s participation in this event. After a phone call with the Ukrainian leader, US President Donald Trump called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Should this demand not be met, Washington and its partner countries promise to impose additional sanctions.
