In the US, the deportation decision affects 24 Ukrainians, but none have been deported yet

щодо 24 українців у США є рішення про видворення, але нікого ще не депортували

As of the end of May 2025, a decision has been made regarding the forced deportation of 24 citizens of Ukraine in the United States, but in practice, the process of their deportation has not yet begun. This was reported by the Ukrainian embassy in the US, noting that no information about the actual deportation of Ukrainians from the territory of this country has been received since the beginning of the year.

Reasons for the delay in the deportation of Ukrainians from the US

Ukrainian diplomats explain that the deportation process has not started yet, particularly due to organizational and logistical difficulties related to the lack of international air connections between Ukraine and the US. This makes it impossible to physically return those detained to their homeland.

“The embassy has not received information about cases of deportation of Ukrainian citizens from the territory of the US in 2025.”

Embassy actions to protect the rights of detained Ukrainians

The Ukrainian embassy recommends that citizens who are in custody in the US, as well as their relatives, seek assistance from the nearest consular offices. Ukrainian diplomats regularly check the conditions of detention, the health status of detainees, their access to medical care, and their ability to communicate with relatives. In cases of violations, embassy representatives contact the relevant US authorities and prison administrations to resolve problematic issues. For citizens facing deportation who do not have valid passport documents, a certificate of identity for return to Ukraine is issued.

The Ukrainian embassy maintains constant communication with the US Department of State and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), monitoring the deportation process of Ukrainians who have violated immigration laws. At the same time, the diplomatic mission emphasizes that resolving migration policy issues falls within the exclusive competence of each sovereign state, and no foreign diplomatic representation has legal mechanisms to influence the decisions of US immigration authorities. The task of Ukrainian diplomats is to ensure the observance of the procedural rights of detainees and, if necessary, to prepare the relevant documents.

Previously, former President Donald Trump announced plans to conduct a large-scale deportation of illegal immigrants and completely close the southern border of the US. According to the White House, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement was tasked with carrying out at least three thousand arrests per day. However, critics of this policy claim that during raids, not only illegal immigrants are detained but also individuals with legal status, including holders of residence permits. Such cases have become the subject of legal proceedings.
