The EU is unlikely to fully ban the issuance of tourist visas to Russian citizens

У Єврокомісії підтвердили, що готують нову стратегію щодо видачі віз громадянам РФ

The European Union is currently unlikely to impose a complete ban on the issuance of tourist visas to citizens of the Russian Federation. This was stated by the EU affairs editor Rikard Jozwiak, noting that there is no consensus among EU member states regarding such a decision.

This is reported by Kyiv24

“Even if only a qualified majority is needed for this measure, too many EU member states express their disagreement,” he wrote on social media platform X.

Visa Restrictions and New Sanctions Package

It was previously reported that one of the key proposals in the new sanctions package against Russia is to tighten the rules for obtaining tourist visas for citizens of that country. There are also plans to further reduce the number of Russian diplomats within the EU.

Currently, the preparation of this sanctions package is ongoing, and its presentation was initially scheduled for September 17. However, the event has been postponed to a later date.

Updated Timelines for Sanctions Approval

According to Politico, the European Commission has informed EU ambassadors about the possible release of the new sanctions package on September 19 or 22. At the same time, according to two diplomats, the EU does not rule out that the announcement of the restrictions could occur before these dates.
