EU Plans to Approve the 19th Sanctions Package Against Russia in September

Євросоюз планує у вересні схвалити 19-й пакет санкцій проти Росії

The European Commission has announced its intention to present a new, already 19th sanctions package against Russia in September. The restrictive measures aim to increase pressure on the aggressor country due to its ongoing war against Ukraine, which has lasted for more than three and a half years.

Essence and Goals of the New Sanctions Package

The planned package of restrictions will continue the European Union’s policy of countering the military aggression of the Russian Federation. Previous sanctions targeted key sectors of the Russian economy, strategic industries, logistics supply chains for weapons, as well as individuals involved in conducting the war against Ukraine.

EU leadership emphasizes that the primary goal of the sanctions is to reduce Russia’s capabilities to continue military actions, limit resources for financing the army, and impact its economic resilience.

Approval Issues and Potential Delays

EU sanctions come into effect only after approval by all member states of the bloc. Previous rounds of approval have often been prolonged due to internal debates, particularly from Slovakia and Hungary, whose governments are led by politicians loyal to the Kremlin. It remains unclear whether the European Commission will be able to meet the planned deadlines for reviewing and adopting the new package.
