The USA voted alongside Russia and Belarus against the UN resolution on Ukraine

США в ООН проголосували спільно з РФ і Білоруссю проти резолюції, яка згадувала війну проти України

The United States reaffirmed its position for the second time in a UN vote regarding a resolution condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine. In this vote, which took place on April 16, American diplomats supported the resolution alongside representatives from Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and five other countries. Meanwhile, 105 states supported the resolution A/79/L/75 «Cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe».

The text of the document discusses the status of Russia, which was expelled from the Council of Europe in March 2022, and emphasizes the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The resolution was authored by diplomats from Luxembourg and Lithuania, and it was supported by over forty countries, including Ukraine.

US Position on the Resolution

US Ambassador to the UN, Jonathan Shrier, explained this support by stating that «the resolution reiterates statements regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war that the United States does not consider conducive to advancing the cause of peace.» He added: “We are confident that a long-term resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian war is crucial for all members of the Council of Europe and the United States. We hope that all UN member states will support and strengthen efforts to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.”

Previously, during the General Assembly vote on reaffirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity, many countries, including Russia and Belarus, voted against it. On February 24, the day the full-scale invasion began, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine, and the international community condemned this aggression by adopting relevant resolutions.

It should also be noted that during the votes regarding the third anniversary of the war, amendments were proposed that replaced the term «Russian-Ukrainian conflict» with «Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine», and the USA voted against these changes. Although the resolutions adopted in the UN do not have binding legal force, their significance is substantial as they reflect the position of the majority of world states and influence the international order.
