Discussion of Trilateral Negotiations on Ending the War

During the conversation, the parties addressed issues related to the upcoming trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Earlier that day, Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the next round of such negotiations could take place in early March. A key step before their conduct will be a meeting of the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, with American representatives, scheduled for February 26.

Several rounds of trilateral meetings have already taken place in January and February, but no specific results have been reported. Meanwhile, during the negotiations that occurred on February 5, the delegations reached an important agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war — this was the first exchange in the last five months.

Prospects for Diplomatic Solutions

U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Vitkoff stated in an interview with American media that he expects “good news” in the coming weeks and does not rule out a possible meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

The U.S. President himself stated before the negotiations in Geneva on February 17-18 that Ukraine should “quickly come to the negotiating table.”

Donald Trump has previously expressed the view that Russia seeks to reach an agreement regarding the war in Ukraine. However, despite U.S. diplomatic efforts, Russia continues to insist on rigid demands, particularly Ukraine’s renunciation of control over the territories of Donbas. The Kremlin also rejects Western security guarantees for Ukraine and maintains maximalist positions on the issue of war. Analysts note that there has been no change in such approaches at this time.

Ukraine insists on receiving reliable security guarantees from the U.S. and European partners, who are expected to play a key role in protecting the country from future Russian aggression.
