“I would say, within two weeks or so, pretty soon,” Trump said at the White House, responding to questions about the timing of his meeting with Putin in Hungary.
Preparation for negotiations and the Hungarian side’s position
While official Moscow has not specified possible dates for the meeting, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that he had a conversation with Donald Trump. According to him, preparations for a peaceful summit between the U.S. and Russia are ongoing, and both sides are actively working on organizing the upcoming dialogue.
Trump and Putin’s phone call: key topics
Donald Trump also revealed details of the nearly two-hour phone call with Vladimir Putin that took place on October 16. The American president described it as “very productive” and noted that the parties agreed on a meeting of high-level country advisors, which is scheduled for next week. After that, according to Trump, a personal meeting with Putin will take place in Budapest.
During the negotiations, the topic of supplying Ukraine with long-range “Tomahawk” missiles was also discussed. Trump stated that the prospect of transferring these missiles to Kyiv caused him dissatisfaction. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, commenting on the results of the conversation, emphasized that Putin reiterated his point that “Tomahawk” missiles would not affect the situation on the battlefield, but relations between the U.S. and Russia could suffer “significant damage,” not to mention the resolution of the war.
It is worth noting that Trump’s conversation with Putin preceded the planned meeting of the U.S. president with Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. This meeting is expected to discuss the possibility of Ukraine receiving “Tomahawk” missiles.
