Trump Calls for Action on Russia Amid Special Envoy’s Visit

U.S. President Donald Trump made a new statement, emphasizing the need for action from Russia. He noted:

“Russia must act. Too many people are dying, thousands every week, in a horrific and senseless war – a war that should never have happened, and wouldn’t have happened if I were president”

. This statement came against the backdrop of his special envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Russia.

Witkoff’s Meeting with Putin

Witkoff is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 11. The Kremlin believes that this meeting will provide an opportunity to “convey to Witkoff the key elements of Russia’s position, the main concerns of Russia, which will then be communicated to President Trump”.

Ceasefire Negotiations

Previously, Trump expressed opposition to Russian attacks on Ukraine while his administration seeks to achieve a ceasefire. His statement was a response to reports from the Kremlin that Russian President Vladimir Putin supports the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine; however, Moscow has yet to receive answers to key questions regarding a possible peace treaty.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous meetings and phone calls between representatives of Ukraine and the U.S., as well as separately between Russia and the U.S. regarding the possibilities for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. In particular, on March 11, the U.S. received Ukraine’s agreement for a 30-day ceasefire, which Putin did not reject but set forth his conditions.
