Trump’s Position on the Incident and Negotiations
During a conversation with reporters, Trump stated that he learned about the incident directly from Putin. He emphasized that now is not the best time for attacks on the residence of the Russian president and expressed outrage over this matter. Trump also did not rule out the possibility that the accusations could be unfounded, noting that “perhaps” there was no attack. However, he stressed that he received such information from Putin himself.
“Now is not the right time (to attack Putin’s residence). I learned about this today from President Putin. I was very angry about it.”
Trump’s statement came against the backdrop of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s accusations against Ukraine for the attack on Putin’s residence in Valdai. Lavrov threatened that Moscow would reconsider its position in negotiations, referring to the alleged “final transition of the Kyiv regime to a policy of state terrorism.” According to the Russian minister, Russia has already identified targets for retaliatory strikes and the timing of their execution.
Kyiv’s Reaction and the Course of Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled Lavrov’s statement as “another lie from Russia” and urged caution, noting that Russia is likely just preparing the ground for its own attacks, particularly on Kyiv. These events are unfolding against the backdrop of negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. regarding a peaceful resolution to the war.
Donald Trump reported significant progress in the negotiation process, with only a few issues left to agree upon. According to Zelensky, the 20-point peace plan has been agreed upon by 90%, and security guarantees by 100%.
Prior to these events, there was a conversation between Trump and Putin, which the American leader characterized as “good and very productive.” Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, clarified that the conversation lasted over an hour and was organized at Trump’s initiative. According to him, both presidents share the view that a temporary ceasefire would only prolong the conflict in Ukraine, although Trump has not publicly confirmed this position.
It is expected that after his meeting with Zelensky, Trump will contact Putin again. Today, a second conversation between the leaders has already taken place. Ushakov also reported that Trump was allegedly shocked to learn about the attack on the state residence of the Russian president.
