Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Proposes to Block Ukraine’s EU Membership Due to Dispute Over UPA

віцеспікер Сейму Польщі закликав блокувати вступ України до ЄС

The Deputy Speaker of the Polish Parliament and leader of the Confederation party, Krzysztof Bosak, has called for blocking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. The reason for this call is the assignment of the name of the Heroes of the UPA to a Ukrainian military unit, which he believes causes tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Political Pressure and Warsaw’s Demands

Krzysztof Bosak stated in an interview with Polish radio that stripping President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Polish Order of the White Eagle is merely a symbolic step. In his opinion, to achieve real influence over Ukraine, more concrete pressure tools need to be applied. In particular, he suggested that Poland officially announce its intention to block Ukraine’s EU membership until Kyiv changes its policy regarding historical figures and allows all exhumations on Ukrainian territory.

“If we want to exert real pressure on Ukraine, we need to move to more concrete gestures that will have an effective impact.”

In addition, Bosak insists on stopping the funding of Starlink operations for Ukraine and proposes that Poland, along with other EU countries, withdraw from the debt support mechanisms for Kyiv.

Context of the Honorary Naming Decision

On May 26, 2026, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree granting the Special Operations Center “North” the honorary name “in the name of the Heroes of the UPA.” As stated in the document, this was done “to restore the historical traditions of the national army” and in connection with the exemplary performance of the unit’s tasks to protect the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

This decision has drawn criticism from Polish politicians. In particular, President of Poland Karol Nawrocki announced his intention to initiate the stripping of Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle due to this decision.

In response to these statements, the Ukrainian side emphasized the importance of unity in countering Russian aggression. Ukraine expressed gratitude to the Polish people for their support since the beginning of the full-scale war and underscored its readiness to continue sharing its military experience.
