“Yesterday (May 30 – Ed.) we received a new IRIS-T launch system. Thank you to Germany for its ongoing contribution to protecting people. Thousands and thousands of lives have been saved thanks to such strong support. But we also need missiles for the air defense systems to have enough capabilities to repel Russian attacks,” Zelensky stated.
Strengthening defense capabilities and international support
The President also reminded that this week Ukraine reached new agreements with Sweden regarding an additional support package, which includes the transfer of Gripen fighter jets to enhance the aviation component of defense. Zelensky emphasized the need for further support from the USA and European partners, stressing that the development of anti-ballistic defense remains one of the main priorities for the country.
Large-scale aid package from Germany
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced a new large-scale cooperation package with Germany worth four billion euros. It includes significant strengthening of air defense, development of long-range capabilities, and joint production of drones. In particular, Germany will finance a contract for several hundred missiles for the Patriot systems, which will significantly enhance the protection of Ukrainian cities and strategically important facilities. Also, as part of the agreements, the transfer of 36 IRIS-T launch systems is planned, which will allow the creation of a multi-layered air defense system.
An additional 300 million euros is allocated for investments in the development of long-range capabilities, which will contribute to the expansion of Ukrainian arms production. Within the framework of the Build with Ukraine project, joint production of medium-range drones using artificial intelligence is starting. At the initial stage, it is planned to manufacture 5,000 drones for the needs of the Defense Forces.
Germany remains the leading European donor of military assistance to Ukraine, especially amid the reduction of support from the USA during Donald Trump’s presidency. This support significantly strengthens the country’s defense capabilities in countering Russian aggression.
