U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to shorten the deadline previously given to Russia for reaching a peace agreement with Ukraine. On July 28, Trump stated that he is disappointed with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as he believes he already knows the answers to his proposals and the developments ahead.
Trump Announces New Sanctions Against Russia
During a conversation with journalists before a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump emphasized that he does not intend to wait for the end of the established 50-day deadline he provided to Russia on July 14. He did not specify the exact new deadline. Previously, this period was set to expire on September 3.
As noted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Trump is increasingly losing patience with Russia’s actions in the war against Ukraine. He stressed that the U.S. is “losing the desire to continue waiting” for steps from Moscow that could lead to a cessation of hostilities.
“President Trump is disappointed with President (of Russia Vladimir) Putin and intends to shorten the deadline, as he believes he already knows the answer to his proposals and what will happen.”
Plans for Pressure and Support for Allies
Trump has previously stated that if his demands are ignored, he is ready to impose new sanctions—primarily high tariffs against Russia and those countries that purchase Russian energy resources. The role of China is particularly noted, as its support in purchasing oil helps Russia continue the war. In Trump’s view, without this support, Putin will not be able to sustain the war for long.
Additionally, Trump announced his intention to sell weapons to U.S. allies for transfer to Ukraine. Several countries, including Germany, have already expressed their willingness to participate in this support scheme.
In Russia, the official reaction to Trump’s statements remains restrained, and Moscow’s position has not changed. Russian representatives continue to insist on peace only on terms that Ukraine finds unacceptable, including the relinquishment of some territories, even those that Russia has never controlled.
