“It is crucial to avoid actions that could exacerbate the security situation in the South Asian region and to work towards a peaceful resolution of disputes. Ukraine actively supports all measures aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region and advocates for the immediate de-escalation of tensions”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that it will closely monitor the situation’s developments and support international initiatives aimed at ensuring peace and stability in South Asia.
Escalation of Tensions Between India and Pakistan
Tensions in the region have increased following Indian airstrikes on Pakistani territory that resulted in casualties. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised a response to India’s actions, which targeted locations in the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir and Punjab province. According to him, the country has the right to self-defense in response to blatant violations of international law.
As tensions rise between the two nuclear states, Pakistan’s National Security Committee has made a decision allowing the country’s military to respond to aggression. The statement notes that “the international community must recognize the seriousness of India’s unprovoked actions and hold it accountable for violating international norms.”
Earlier, Indian military forces struck targets in the Pakistan-controlled region of Kashmir and Punjab province, justifying it as a response to an attack in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir that occurred two weeks ago, resulting in the deaths of 26 tourists, mostly Indian nationals. India accused two of the three suspects in the attack of being Pakistani citizens, but without corroborating evidence. Pakistan denies any involvement and claims that only civilians were affected, resulting in 26 deaths and 46 injuries.
Both countries continue to shell the Line of Control in the region and shoot down each other’s military equipment. The escalation of the conflict has raised alarm in the global community. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope that hostilities would end quickly and added that he had been informed about the situation. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the events with Indian and Pakistani representatives. The United Nations General Assembly has called for maximum restraint, emphasizing that “the world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan.”
Kashmir is a region that has seen military conflicts between India and Pakistan for over 80 years, with parts also controlled by China. According to Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, more than 45,000 people have died here since the late 1980s.
