Ukraine Invited the Foreign Minister of Ghana Following Appeal Regarding Captive

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has acknowledged Ghana’s concerns regarding the information about the capture of a citizen of that country. This was stated by the head of the Ukrainian MFA, Andriy Sybiha, on January 7, emphasizing readiness for an open dialogue with the Ghanaian side.

Diplomatic Dialogue Between Ukraine and Ghana

According to Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine has taken into account Ghana’s appeal regarding the return of its citizen, who was detained in a combat zone as a Russian mercenary. The head of Ukrainian diplomacy also confirmed his invitation to Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to visit Ukraine in February 2026.

“We have taken into account Ghana’s concerns and requests regarding the return of the Ghanaian citizen who was captured in the combat zone as a Russian mercenary. I reiterate my invitation to Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to visit Ukraine in February 2026,” he stated.

Access for Ghanaian Diplomats to Captives

Sybiha emphasized that Ghanaian diplomats will have the opportunity to meet with the military captives from their country upon request, in accordance with international humanitarian law. Ukraine is also ready for substantive discussions on this situation with the Ghanaian side.

The minister added that Kyiv looks forward to further cooperation with Ghana in the spirit of mutual respect and partnership. At this time, the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not officially commented on the received invitation.

Meanwhile, Andriy Sybiha did not specify which particular case of the capture of a Ghanaian citizen is being referred to. Earlier, in November, the Ukrainian MFA reported that Ukraine has recorded the participation of at least 1,536 citizens from African countries in combat operations on the side of Russia, suggesting that the actual number may be higher.
