Germany is actively negotiating with the United States regarding the supply of modern Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine. This was announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his visit to London, emphasizing that negotiations between Berlin and Washington have reached a practical level.
Agreement on details between defense ministries
According to Merz, the defense ministers of Germany and the United States are already coordinating the technical aspects of the upcoming agreement. Discussions, as noted by the German leader, are being conducted in a “very specific” format, indicating the seriousness of both parties’ intentions to provide Ukraine with additional protection against aerial threats.
“They (the systems – ed.) also need to be transported and installed. This is a matter of hours, not days, possibly weeks,” Merz stated.
It is expected that European countries will transfer Patriot systems from their arsenals to Ukraine, in exchange for receiving new equipment from the United States for their own defense.
U.S. position and international community response
On July 14, U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, confirmed the intention to provide Ukraine with military assistance worth billions of dollars, which includes Patriot systems. According to him, funding for these supplies will be allocated by NATO.
At the same time, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Russia’s actions, which have intensified air attacks against Ukraine. The American leader announced the possibility of imposing 100% secondary tariffs if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days. In European countries, this timeframe is considered too long, but the initiative itself has been positively received.
For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized Trump’s statements, emphasizing that promises regarding weapons and tariff increases “are not a signal for peace, but rather for the continuation of war.”
