Ukrainians will switch to winter time at the end of October

This is reported by Kyiv24

On the night of October 26 to 27 at 4:00 AM Kyiv time, residents of Ukraine should set their clocks back one hour — to 3:00 AM. This marks the transition to what is known as “winter” time, a traditional procedure for the autumn season.

How the clock change occurs

The vast majority of modern devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, have an automatic time adjustment feature. Therefore, owners of this technology will not need to make manual changes — the system will automatically update the time at the designated moment. At the same time, users of mechanical or electronic clocks without automatic transition features should remember to adjust their clocks according to the new requirements.

History of the transition to winter time in Ukraine

The tradition of seasonal clock changes has existed in Ukraine for over four decades. Ukrainians first began to follow these rules in 1981 when such a decision was made at the level of the Soviet Union. In independent Ukraine, summer time was standardized for the entire country in 1996. Since then, Ukrainians have changed their clocks twice a year — in spring and autumn — and this process traditionally takes place on weekends to allow citizens to adapt more easily to the time changes.

“Ukrainians have been changing their clocks in autumn and spring for 43 years.”

In July 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that proposed keeping “winter” time permanently. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky vetoed this document, so the transition to winter and summer time in Ukraine remains a current practice for now.
