Ukraine’s Position on Threats from Iran
Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgiy Tikhiy, emphasized that the Iranian regime has actively supported Russia’s aggression against Ukraine for many years by supplying drones and modern technologies for attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. He condemned Iran’s justification of its actions and called for an end to the manipulation of international law.
“In this context, it is absurd when representatives of this regime threaten Ukraine while citing the right to self-defense enshrined in Article 51 of the UN Charter. It is akin to a serial killer justifying their crimes by referencing the criminal code,” he stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the Iranian leadership must be held accountable not only for crimes against its own people but also for its destructive role on the international stage, particularly against Ukraine and other nations.
Statements from Iranian Officials and International Context
Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, Ebrahim Azizi, previously stated that Ukraine has become a “party to the war” because, in his view, it is supplying drones to Israel and can therefore be considered a “legitimate target” for attacks from Iran. In a post on social media platform X, Azizi wrote that by providing drone support to the Israeli regime, Ukraine has effectively become embroiled in the war and, according to Article 51 of the UN Charter, has turned its territory into a legitimate target for Iran.
These statements have emerged amid escalating conflict in the region: Iranian forces have responded with missile and drone attacks not only on Israel and American military facilities but also on regional neighbors that Tehran considers allies of the United States.
In March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv is ready to assist Middle Eastern countries in defending against Iranian attacks. Ukrainian experts are already working on this issue directly in the region. Zelensky also noted that Ukraine has received 11 requests for interceptor drones from various countries, including Iran’s neighbors, European states, and the United States, aimed at protection against Iranian drones.
According to international media, the United States and one of the Gulf countries are considering purchasing Ukrainian drones to intercept Iranian “Shaheds.” At the same time, Ukraine is offering regional countries cooperation in the field of air defense, expecting in return the supply of missiles for its own air defense systems.
