Details of the Kidnapping and Extortion
The incident occurred in March 2024 in the Solomianskyi district of the capital. Two Kyiv residents, born in 1970 and 1979, stopped a 66-year-old cardiologist, the head of a department at one of Kyiv’s hospitals. One of the criminals, a 55-year-old man, had previously gathered information about the victim and during the attack showed him a fake service ID. They forced the doctor into a car, placed a black bag over his head, and, threatening to kill him, demanded two million US dollars.
“The court found the criminal guilty of forcing the capital’s cardiologist into a car under the guise of a security service employee. A black bag was placed over the doctor’s head, and, threatening to kill him, the attacker along with an accomplice began demanding two million dollars. Not getting what they wanted, the criminals took 15,000 hryvnias in cash and released the victim.”
Operational Investigation and Court Decision
After the kidnapping, one of the witnesses contacted the police, reporting that he saw unknown individuals forcibly put an elderly man into a car and drive away. The operatives quickly identified the attackers and detained the main suspect in the case. During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that the crime was premeditated.
The Solomianskyi District Court found the main defendant guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in prison with property confiscation. Legal proceedings against his accomplice are currently ongoing.
