Water Condition in the Rusaniivskyi Canal: Ecologists Found Organic Exceedances

Overview and Laboratory Water Studies

Local residents reported an unusual color of the water in the canal, raising concerns within the community. In response to these inquiries, specialists from the State Environmental Inspection of the Capital Region conducted an inspection of the area and collected surface water samples to analyze their chemical composition and properties.

During the inspection, inspectors discovered a metal pipe partially submerged in the water. Specialists determined that the pipe belongs to one of the enterprises and was previously used for water intake, but is currently not in operation.

Causes of Color Change and Analysis Results

Regarding the blue-green coloration of the water near the shore and on the concrete slabs, ecologists explain this as a result of natural processes. The color change occurred due to the decomposition of organic residues, particularly algae and reeds, which accumulated after the canal clearing works were carried out.

“According to the results of the studies on the composition and properties of the water, an exceedance of the maximum allowable concentration for the chemical oxygen demand indicator was recorded at 1.1 times, indicating a slight increase in the content of organic substances in the water.”

Thus, the ecological situation in the canal remains under control, and the slight increase in organic substances does not pose a significant threat to the environment. The inspection will continue to monitor the water condition in the Rusaniivskyi Canal.
