Zelensky Begins Official Visit to Spain: Meetings Scheduled with the King and Prime Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Spain for a working visit, where he has already visited the Congress of Deputies in Madrid. This is Zelensky’s third trip to Spain since the start of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation in February 2022.

High-Level Meetings and Support for Ukraine

During the visit, Zelensky will hold talks with the King of Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, as well as representatives from the Spanish defense sector. According to the official schedule of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, a joint visit to the National Art Center Reina Sofia Museum is planned at 16:30 local time (17:30 Kyiv time), after which an official meeting will take place at the Moncloa Palace.

Security Agreement and New Arrangements

In May 2024, Ukraine and Spain signed a security agreement under which Madrid committed to provide Kyiv with one billion euros in 2024, with the possibility of increasing this amount to five billion euros by 2027 to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Additionally, last month Spain joined NATO’s program for purchasing American weapons for Ukraine (PURL), which will be one of the key issues in the negotiations between Sanchez and Zelensky.

After signing a number of bilateral agreements, the parties plan to hold a joint press conference.

Kyiv is working to ensure that the meeting with Prime Minister Sanchez “brings agreements that will give us more strength.”
