Zelensky Expresses Concern Over the Impact of the War in Iran on the Ukrainian Conflict

Зеленський розповів, скільки Росія може заробити завдяки послабленню «нафтових» санкцій США

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed serious concern about the potential consequences of the conflict in the Middle East for the course of Russia’s war against Ukraine. During a recent interview following a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, Zelensky reported a “very bad feeling” regarding the impact of events in Iran on the situation surrounding Ukraine.

The War in Iran Delays Peace Negotiations Regarding Ukraine

The head of state emphasized that peace negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine are “constantly being postponed,” and he cited the war in Iran as one of the main reasons for this. Zelensky also warned of possible disagreements among Western allies and urged U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to meet and find common ground, as tensions have arisen between them due to Trump’s repeated criticism of the British leader.

Donald Trump has expressed grievances against Starmer and NATO countries, stating that the United States did not receive the expected support during the war with Iran. Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister stressed that the UK has no intention of becoming embroiled in a broader military conflict, and the government of the country emphasized its “strong” relations with the U.S.

Peace Negotiations Have Stalled Due to Decreased U.S. Interest

According to media reports, attempts by the U.S. to act as a mediator in the peace settlement of the war between Russia and Ukraine are currently suspended, as U.S. President Donald Trump is losing interest in negotiations. One of the key reasons cited for this is the U.S. and Israel’s war against Iran, which has diverted Washington’s attention from the Ukrainian issue. At the same time, the Kremlin denied these claims and stated that the Russian Federation remains interested in negotiations to end the war, although the time and place for the next round remain uncertain.

“We do not trust Russia, but I think and believe that Americans really want to end this war. I hope they will help us, but more pressure needs to be applied to Russia, not to me,” Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with Politico.

For his part, Trump, in an interview with NBC News, accused Zelensky of unwillingness to reach a peace agreement, noting that negotiating with the Ukrainian president is “much harder” than with Putin. He emphasized that ending Russia’s war against Ukraine remains a priority for him.

The first rounds of trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. took place in late January and early February in the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland. The next meeting was scheduled for early March, but its organization was disrupted due to the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.
