Discussion on Sanctions and Protection Against Russian Aggression
Zelensky emphasized the importance of increasing pressure on Moscow, noting that this is currently the only effective mechanism of influence. The President also informed the senators about the ongoing missile attacks by Russia on the Ukrainian population, as well as the damage caused to American businesses as a result of these strikes.
“We do not see other instruments of influence on Moscow besides pressure. There is an important sanctions bill in the Senate right now, and we hope it will be effective. I also informed them about the constant Russian strikes on our people and, in particular, on American businesses. It is absolutely fair for Russian money to be used to defend against this terror, and we discussed the prospects of using frozen Russian assets to purchase missiles for the ‘Patriots'”
Utilization of Frozen Russian Assets
During the meeting, the possibility of using frozen assets of the Russian Federation to purchase missiles for the Patriot systems was discussed separately. Zelensky stressed that this is a just response to Russian terror directed against Ukrainians and American interests.
At this time, Senators Blumenthal and Whitehouse have not officially commented on the details of this meeting. Earlier this week, they participated in the Munich Security Conference.
