Zelensky Nominates Fedorov for Minister of Defense

President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted an official proposal to the Verkhovna Rada for the appointment of Mykhailo Fedorov as the Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Leadership Changes in the Government

The draft resolution was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on January 13. On the same day, members of parliament voted to dismiss Mykhailo Fedorov from his position as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, which he held until that time. The parliament also supported the resignation of Denys Shmyhal from the post of Minister of Defense, a position he had occupied since July of last year.

Technological Defense as a Key Principle

On January 2, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed to Mykhailo Fedorov, who was then the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, to head the Ministry of Defense. Following this, the president discussed the operational format of the ministry with Fedorov. Zelensky emphasized that the main condition for the changes should be the application of modern technologies to preserve the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.

The president stated that the main principle for preserving the lives of soldiers is the technological advancement of defense.

On January 3, Zelensky held a meeting with Denys Shmyhal, during which he proposed that Shmyhal transition from the position of Minister of Defense to First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy.
